Just like how Stardew Valley had resource management down perfectly and walked this fine line between a stress-free yet thoroughly enjoyable experience and an almost boring and tedious one - so does Spiritfarer, it never feels like you’re grinding or having to spend way too long to get anywhere. This part of the game feels a lot like Stardew Valley or other similar games to me, the game even has a day-night cycle - what I LOVE about this, is that it’s executed in a way that feels PERFECT.

The boat you upgrade throughout the game is where the resource management part comes into play - on your boat, you’ll have to manage in an almost Tetris-like fashion, what new buildings and locations can go where, you’ll also have to tend to your crops, cook food, weave some threads, fish, talk to people, build the characters their own little place to rest among a number of other things. You’re also told where to find someone to upgrade your boat so you can start getting on with your journey. Stella is given the “Everlight” by Charon, and this is pretty much how the boat is powered, and how Stella is able to cut down trees, water seeds and plants, fish and do everything you need to do to take care of the recently deceased and help them on that path to the afterlife. Anyone familiar with some Greek mythology will recognise this part of the story.

Without spoiling anything outside of maybe the first few minutes of playtime, you play a girl called Stella who takes over the role of Charon as the ferrymaster that takes the deceased across the river Styx and into the afterlife. Hey - my last post was removed so I've put this up as a written review.Īt it’s core, Spiritfarer is basically a simulation game - the developers, Thunderlotus, describe the game as a “cozy management game about dying” and this is about as accurate as any descriptor of the game could possibly get.
